How Much Does a New Roof Cost?

Are you considering replacing your roof? If your roof is falling into disrepair, investing in a new one is certainly worthwhile. Not only does your roof go a long way toward adding to the visual beauty of your home, but it also keeps your home and your family protected from the elements. Before you hire someone to install a new roof, however, it is essential to learn more about the options that are available to you. This way, you can be sure to select the one that best suits both your short- and long-term needs.

Asphalt Composition Shingles

Asphalt composition shingles are the most commonly used shingles in the United States. This is partially due to the fact that asphalt composition was once the most widely available option, but it is also due to the relatively low cost when compared to other roofing choices. In fact, installing a new asphalt composition roof typically costs anywhere from $1,500 to $9,000. Despite the low cost, asphalt composition shingles last an average of 20 or more years and they are easy to install. In climates that undergo extreme changes in temperature, however, asphalt composition shingles can become warped. Furthermore, they are not the most attractive option available.

Metal Roofing

Despite being quite popular in other countries, metal roofing is still relatively uncommon in the United States. Nonetheless, metal roofing offers a number of options to select from. Not only is it available in a variety of different colors and styles, but it is also available in copper, aluminum, galvanized and stainless steel, corrugated iron and metal blends. As such, metal roofing is extremely durable and resistant to hail, fire, wind and snow. It is also easy to install and has a lifespan of 20 to 50 years. On the other hand, metal roofing is not the most attractive option and it is more expensive then asphalt composition shingles. While basic interlocking steel shingles typically cost between $5,000 and $17,000 to install, aluminum metal roofing generally costs $12,000 to $20,000 and corrosion resistant steel sheets cost between $12,000 and $22,000. Copper and other high-end styles can cost anywhere from $25,000 to $40,000.

Wood Shingles and Shake

While wood shingles are cut, shake is comprised of pieces of split wood blocks. Both options offer a beautiful appearance and a high level of durability. In fact, wood shingles and shake can last anywhere from 30 to 50 years. These shingles are far more difficult to install, however, and is far more costly. While wood shingles generally cost $7,000 to $15,000 to install, shake typically costs anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000.

Tile Roofing

Tile roofing is the most costly option available, with basic clay tiles costing anywhere from $12,000 to $21,000 and high-end tile costing up to $65,000. Tile roofing options include clay, concrete and sand, all of which offer a high level of resistance to fire, sun damage, damage from insects and rot. As such, tile roofing offers a lifespan of 50 years or more. On the downside, tile roofing is extremely difficult to install and requires professional upkeep every 10 to 20 years. Furthermore, due to the weight of tile roofing, some homes will require additional structural support before it can be installed.
