Should You Wallpaper or Hire Someone to Do It for You?

Wallpaper was once quite popular.  In fact, during the 60s and 70s, nearly every home had wallpaper in place.  During the 80s and 90s, however, wallpaper started to fall out of favor among homeowners.  Recently, wallpaper has enjoyed an impressive comeback, and this has been partially because it has become so much easier to install.  Therefore, when answering the question to should you wallpaper or hire someone to do it for you, it is important to consider the wallpaper you will be using.

Looking at Today’s Wallpaper Options

In the past, you didn’t have nearly as many wallpaper options as you do today.  In fact, the only wallpaper you had available to you was that which required using glue and hanging the paper to the wall.  This process could be quite messy if you didn’t know what you were doing and the end result could be wallpaper that was lumpy, bumpy, and otherwise unattractive.

Although this type of wallpaper is still available today, you do have other options available to you.  For example, some of today’s wallpaper is more like a huge sticker that can be peeled and stuck to the wall.  In addition, some wallpaper has special markers on the pattern to help you line up the design so it all meshes together properly.  With these guiders in place, it becomes much easier to hang the wallpaper properly.

Deciding If You Should Do It Yourself

Although hanging today’s wallpaper is much easier than it was in the past, that still doesn’t mean it is a simple process.  Even with peel and stick wallpaper, there is a possibility that it will become bunched up when you hang it.  Similarly, you may have difficulty hanging the paper straight, particularly if your walls are not perfectly square.  Of course, the fact that hanging wallpaper is time consuming should also be considered when deciding whether or not hiring someone is worth it.  After all, you can’t place a value on your time!
